The WID-Easy Endometrial Cancer Vaginal Swab Test

The WID-Easy Vaginal Swab test is designed for peri-menopausal and post-menopausal women aged over 45 who are experiencing abnormal bleeding. It was developed by researchers at University College London, working in partnership with the UK's largest gynae cancer charity, The Eve Appeal.

It is a revolutionary new test to more accurately and quickly check whether someone with post- or peri-menopausal bleeding may be at risk of endometrial cancer (womb cancer). Around 3 in every 100 people with this type of bleeding will be diagnosed with endometrial cancer. In the past, many patients needed several different tests to find out if cancer was present.

How does the WID-Easy Vaginal Swab Test Work?

The WID-Easy Test is a simple, pain-free vaginal swab, very similar to a cervical smear, used to check for womb cancer in women with abnormal bleeding. Instead of a surgery or an internal scan, our Consultant Gynaecologist at Serenity Women's Clinic, Miss Sinha, gently collects a sample from the vagina and just behind the cervix. This sample is then sent to a specialist lab where experts look for tiny "markers" on your DNA that act like a barcode to show if cancer is present or not.
Because the test is highly accurate at ruling out cancer, it helps 9 out of 10 women avoid painful, invasive and expensive hospital procedures, like a hysteroscopy (where a camera is inserted into the womb). It is especially helpful if standard scans are unclear due to things like fibroids or if you have a higher BMI.

What happens during the WID-Easy Test?

During your WID-Easy Test appointment at Serenity Women's Clinic, you’ll have a chance to ask any questions you may have. Before the examination, you’ll be asked to remove clothing from the waist down. You’ll be made comfortable on a couch and covered with a sheet to protect your privacy.

Consultant Gynaecologist, Miss Sinha, will gently use a speculum to collect a sample from your vagina and the area behind your cervix. This part takes around 10 seconds. The sample will then be placed in a secure container and sent to the WID-Easy Test laboratory for testing. Once we have your results back, Miss Sinha will review them and contact you to discuss them if needed.

How accurate are the WID-Easy Test results?

The WID-Easy Endometrial Cancer Vaginal Swab test is incredibly reliable, offering the same high level of accuracy in detecting Endometrial Cancer (Womb cancer) as a traditional hospital ultrasound. However, its biggest advantage is its ability to correctly identify when a patient does not have cancer. While standard scans can sometimes be inconclusive, leading to "false alarms" that require painful follow-up surgeries, this test is much more precise.
In fact, it has been shown to reduce these False Alarms by about 90%. This means that if your WID-Easy Test result is negative, you can feel confident that you are at very low risk, allowing you to avoid invasive procedures like a hysteroscopy or biopsy that you likely do not need. It provides a clear, evidence-based answer so you can move forward with the right care for your symptoms.

How do I prepare for the WID-Easy Swab Test and will I need any downtime afterwards?

Please follow the advice below to get ready for your WID-Easy Vaginal Swab Test appointment at Serenity Women's Clinic:

  • Do not have sexual intercourse for 24 hours before the test.

  • Avoid using vaginal lubricants, as these can affect the quality of the swab sample. If you use vaginal creams such as estradiol, you can continue these as prescribed.

  • If you have had a cervical smear or PAP test within 72 hours of your WID-Easy Test appointment, please contact us as soon as possible as your WID-Easy Test may need to be rescheduled.

No, you do not need to do anything special after your appointment, and you can carry on with your day as normal.

What might my WID-Easy Test result show?

Your WID-Easy Endometrial Cancer Test result will be either negative or positive.

  • If your result is negative, your risk of endometrial cancer is very low. Miss Sinha will explain the test result to you and plan any further steps / appointments with you if any are necessary.

  • If your result is positive, this means you are at a higher risk of endometrial cancer. Miss Sinha will discuss the next steps with you, which may require a further test called a hysteroscopy (a closer look inside the womb) and biopsy. However, we will be there with you to talk you through everything and plan any future steps needed.
